• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I ran through these sequences for the first time this afternoon. There was about 20KT of wind blowing down the X at altitude, and I went out of the box once in each sequence. These sequences are pretty straightforward. Some box position notes - In the Sportsman sequence, pull for Fig. 1 just a little on the downwind side of the box so you don't need to rush into the Reverse Wedge to stay in the box on the upwind side here. With a good wind blowing down the X, the spin will need to be dropped on the edge of the box. I was fairly close to the upwind edge of the box on the downline after the spin, but was back around center box pulling level after the Hammer w/ 1/4 roll down. I went out downwind during the Reverse Cuban. Downwind 45 lines eat up a lot of box when the wind is blowing. And in wind, the Fig. 8 Cuban needs to be put near the upwind edge of the box to stay in during the turn. Altitude loss from the start of Fig. 1 to the lowest point in the sequence was about 1,000' on this 48 degree day.

For the Intermediate sequence, pull for Fig. 1 well on the upwind side of the box. In wind, the Hammer will need to be placed right on the edge of the box to stay in during the Goldfish. I was only about 3/4 the way down the box on the downline of the Hammer, and went out downwind during the Goldfish. You can't waste time going into Figures 7 & 8 if the wind is blowing down the X.

Since there is no Y-axis movement during the hammer, do the 1/4 roll up to the left so you can pivot into the wind - unless you've got an M14 up front, then roll right. :) I had not done a 90 deg. roller with a 1/2 roll before today. Nothing special about it - just takes some deliberate rudder use and a slower roll rate. Takes a lot of rudder to keep the turn going in the last 60 degrees of roll. Be sure to put a big float on top of the P-loop. Don't try to draw a long vertical upline here. Just make it perceptible so you'll have the best chance of flying this figure round. Remember it's into the wind over the top. Altitude loss from the start of Fig. 1 to the lowest point here was about 1,200'.
