• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Hello everyone...haven't posted for a while but I need some of your expert advice on Antenna Locations on my Skybolt...Long story short...Getting a lot of static on my radio...comes and goes but lately it is so bad I can't here anything over the noise...My current antenna is located inside about 2 feet behind the rear seat..it is a good quality unit and is well grounded on a custom alum plate...
Due to the location, it has always had some directional issues but was always readable...I've been advised to get it outside and on the bottom of the plane for best performance...question is location, since there is very little metal on the underbelly of the plane...best location is about 24" behind the exhaust pipes, just forward of the plex belly glass....assuming this would work, I also need to re-locate the transponder antenna and the question becomes, how far apart do these two antennas need to be...I'm getting lots of conflicting data...any one have a Skybolt radio/transponder setup that is performing well???..Any suggestions would be appreciated...as additional information, radio is newer Icom, coax is new and RG-400 double insulated and works perfect with engine off, mag filters are in place...
