• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Anyone tried tuned earplugs?

In my ongoing search for a quieter flight experience, I'm following a new path: tuned earplugs. I just ordered a set of these:

Reviews seem to be mixed, but generally positive. Most of the meh-to-negative reviews are from people who admit that their anatomy is the problem, so my best guess is that the plugs themselves work reasonably well, just not for all people.

I'm curious if anyone else has tried using this kind of filtered/tuned earplug under a headset. I'm planning to use them when flying the Champ, and if I find myself in an open cockpit sooner rather than later, they should help there as well.

The short sell is that the tuned plugs specifically block wind noise, while allowing speech frequencies through. I had rides in a couple different biplanes a while back where I simply couldn't hear the radio once we were airborne with disposable foam plugs in, but with plugs out, both wind and radio were too loud. The idea is that these will still allow me to hear the radio, while blocking most of the wind noise.

They should arrive in a few days, and I'll post back with my impressions if anyone's interested.
