• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Ladies and Gents. I have a Hatz CB-1 with a compass in both the front and rear cockpit. Both are very erratic and inconsistent. One day they will be 10 degrees off, the next flight will be 20-30 degrees off - never correct. I've swung the compass' several times. I've replaced the rear compass. I've tried Magnetic Compass Shield. All without material improvement. The rear panel is pretty crowded but I've been able to reroute all electrical wires away from the compass. Mag switches are the only thing electrical in the front panel and the wires are not near the compass.

I occasionally fly a few hundred miles from home base. If my i phone ever dies (Foreflight) I could find things interesting. Also, my AI has been patient but would like to see an accurate compass. I've read about welded tube structures having a magnetic field introduced during fabrication. How long does that stay in the structure? My plane was built in late 90's. How do you determine if that's the case? How do you remove it? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your ideas,
Dave
