• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

For those of you that have this task upcoming or are pondering the vinyl stripes, here is what is involved with the masking process of the wing.

This is what you start with:

Then a blue print with holes at the intersections of lines and around the curves is very carefully located on the wing and pencil marks made where all the holes are and you are left with marks like this:

and then fine line masking tape is run around until you end up with this:

One little trick I have been using is to double the tape over on itself on one end of each piece of tape. It sort of makes a pull tab when you go to remove it which makes it much easier:

Overall, it took about 2 hours for each side to lay it out and do the taping. I still have to pull the ailerons off and mask the wells and mask the big areas, but it didn't take as much time as I thought. The fuselage was a different story.....
