• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

New to the Biplane Forum and this is my first post.

In
1983 my brother started building a Kelly D, plan number 30. After
working
on it for some time, he hung the fuselage
in the ceiling of his shop and stored the wings. I have recently
acquired the plane and have been in the process of picking up where he
left off. I will be modifying it somewhat -- I have made a down payment
on a Rotec R3600 radial engine and will be rounding the fuselage --
can't have a rectangular biplane with a radial engine. Another
modification that I am presently working on is redesigning the landing
gear for a more conventional look and raising the fuselage to handle an
80 inch prop. Have a couple of questions at this point: 1) Has anyone
out there put a radial on a Kelly -- if so would love to bend his ear.
2) I am going to use Spruce shock absorber coil springs on the landing
gear -- part number 06-13200. I have a design worked out but know the
use of the springs has been done many times before. Does anyone have a
"standard design" -- don't necessarily want to recreate the wheel.
Maybe there is another spring/system that someone has been using.

Would appreciate any comments, ideas, etc.
Thanks,Stan
