A friend and I were talking about my upcoming Skybolt project and got on the subject of paint schemes. We were both stumped about why the presence of sunbursts, diamonds and panels of checkerboards is so common on akro airplanes. Is it traditional or does it have something to do with being able to tell the orientation of the aircraft in flight from a distance? Does anyone know for sure?
