• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

It might be slightly off topic here to talk about props but we are discussing weight so here goes.
First we all know wood props are lighter than metal but I've been told traditional wood props give up some performance to flex compared to metal clubs so the performance boost that would be gained from the weight savings is lost.
Any opinions on this?
Also as a second question would a composite reinforced wood core prop be stiffer enough to provide the best of both worlds? Stiffness and light weight? (great grammar, I know):p
Finally I guess the best overall would be a composite CS prop. But are they worth the money for a non competition Sunday afternoon sportplane? And aren't they high maintenance?
I'm thinking a two blade Catto might be the perfect compromise. Any experienced wisdom, personal opinions or wild speculation is appreciated.
