• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

I've got a new Microair 760, with new cabling throughout and an (aluminium) turtle deck mounted antenna on my S-1S, which passed an SWR test on installation. I recently bought a Zulu2 headset and having messed around with mic gain and a mic muff to kill the background noise which was originally reported, I can now get radio strength reports of 5.

Unfortunately, on an apparently random basis, I also get radio strength reports of 2 and 3 and I also hear very differing qualities of radio reception during a flight and with the same station, including hearing another aircraft as garbled, which apparently the ground station can hear fine. This all seems to point to ground plane problems and I'm considering mounting a replacement antenna, internally and inverted in the fuselage, probably on a new ground plane, mounted just below the luggage compartment floor. I'd appreciate any feedback on any of the above from anybody who recognises these symptoms and has managed to cure them!
