I am in the process of building my wing root fairings and had a question on the attachment. I attached the lower faring with the same screws that attach my side and belly skin. Is it best to leave the outboard edge free to float against the wing or can you run some small screws through this edge also? I'll have to attach the upper faring with some small number six sheet metal screws into the wing however it just butts up against the fuselage.
I remember reading here about the problems associated with sheet metal screws working loose that go into wood. I made up a test piece using the same 6 mm plywood that these fairing attach screws will go into. I drilled a number 40 hole, installed the sheetmetal screw, removed it and then filled the hole with superglue. After the glue dried I reinstalled the screw. It seemed to work fine however I'm not sure if it's totally going to solve the issue of the screws working loose over time.
