• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

At least I hope. I made a 1 hour plus test flight yesterday which makes 10 hours TT on the new engine. Having cut the the first oil filter at 4 hours I saved the tiny bit of stuff and added another tiny bit after 6 hours on the 2nd filter. The total isn't evern worth a picture. And I know what "making metal" looks like from the first engine, like almost a teaspoon after 23 hours and almost that much more in another 10 hours.

Previous compression check was fine with lowest cylinder 70/80, others 73, 75 and 78 as I recall. Judging by pulling it thru now it feels better(I could feel the lower cylinder before) I didn't fly today, I'll do another check next time it's hot.

Oil? It has used less than a quart in the 5 hours since I got the new breather installed and oil return line from seperator. I believe that is because I put 6 quarts in it. The last hour starting with just over 5 quarts, I could not see that it used any at all in an hour. I am running it hard at 2600 rpm except for checking speed at 2500, 2400, 2300 and 2200 rpm.

Bottom line. While I'll keep watching, Im very, Very, VERY Happy for a change. I hope the other franken engines do as well.

BTW. After the discovery that chrome cylinders can't be honed I caught some non aviation chrome cylinder advice on line and checked with my local friend IA about possible "deglazing". He suggested hand deglazing with scotch bright and mineral spirits coupled with new rings might work although he had found that just new rings/running it hard might be better than 50/50. I did the scotch bright and new rings and it may be working.

Oil temps and CHT's good too.

Did I say I was happy? So, so far-so good.

Jack
