• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Does anyone have experience taping their Friese ailerons using either method shown here? I need to replace the tape on mine. It was previously taped on top as shown. Just curious if it makes any difference whether the top or bottom is taped. I assume as long as the gap is sealed it doesn't matter? Taping from the bottom would look better. I was surprised at the difference without the tape...the ailerons were heavier and a good bit less responsive.
I've seen other folks draw diagrams of taping their aileron from the top of the wing cove to the bottom of the aileron or vice versa. That method is specified on the same page from the IAC Tech Tips below for symmetrical ailerons, but not for the Friese, since the Friese ailerons can be taped in this simpler manner that would not work for symmetrical ailerons.
