• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

Hi

Not long ago tried to find out AN bolts for my Laser spar atach. From the maker of the wing (one of most respected acro builders in the US) was told I had originally a grade 9 bolt and replaced with that.

I have studied the specs and 125000 vs 180000 of a grade 9 for tensile strength. They are cheap, and when I installed my mechanics told me the marks on the bolt show it is good for shear strength. That is what it will work on the spar of a monoplane.

Someone told me that are harder and as that, if they fail they will snap, not bent as a AN. But as masive as an AN10 is and with 50% more strenght I know I will not bracke them...

Am I missing something? Are you guys using them in other parts or the complete plane build? For small AN3 and 4 would make sense to stay with AN but for biger aplications (gear, engine mount, wings, etc) it can be good to use grade 9?
