Just recently I have relocated my tail mounted / forward facing gopro from the Right to Left hand side of the aircraft.
The first thing I noticed in looking at the film from this angle is that I loose fuel through the fuel tank air vent pipe each time I spend a few seconds inverted and roll back to upright - particularly if the roll is to the left (which it mostly is)
It's difficult to tell how much comes out each time, but it's enough to wet the spat and leave a fuel trail in the air for a couple of seconds. if there's a lot of rolling going on I suspect that it could amount to a significant proportion of the aircraft's "consumption".
My setup is to "plans" with a flop tube and wobble pump. The vent goes from the top of the tank down to the L/H gear fairing them out by the spat just behind the brake caliper. It's in 1/4 bore aluminium apart from a flexible at the gear root.
I suspect that what is happening is that the vent pipe fills to the level of the main tank when inverted and then the contents of the pipe drain when the aircraft becomes upright again, this being said, it looks like there's slightly more than just a "pipe full" of fuel coming out (and even a pipe full is probably £0.50 given the price of avgas here in the uk !).
Has anyone else seen this ?. Is there an easy way around it ?.
