Hi all!
I am a 30 year pilot. I've owned 2 Mooneys in the past and I currently own a highly modified H35 Bonanza.
Before I bought the Bonanza, I was looking at a GP-4. Now that I've had the Bonanza for a few years, I'm more interested in filling my adrenaline habit.
I like the idea of building as I can get to know my machine intimately. I do all the work I can legally do on my 35 and enjoy knowing every little detail. I really like the idea of conditional inspections and doing all of my own work.
Questions:
Is the M14 relatively easy to maintain for someone who has maintained and or rebuilt several car and motorcycle engines? Or do experienced builders still like to take the engine to a specialist? My approach would be to take it to a specialist initially for on-the-job training/mentoring, then take over maintenance as my confidence level increases.
Is the 12 something I can barnstorm with and explore the country-side? I wouldn't consider an Extra or an Edge or a Pitts S-1 as something I'd want to go explore in. They'd be what I'd consider dedicated aerobatic machines only. And no, I've not flown in any of them, so I may be completely off-base.
I think it would be fun to pick a point an hour or so away, fly there low and slow and maybe do some gentleman's aerobatics on the way there and/or back depending on the wildness of my passenger. Spend the night camping or at a hotel, then come back the next day. I also like sport-bikes(motorcycles), and I know I'd outgrow a Citabria or Decathlon pretty quickly.
I saw this link and thought, yeah! that's me!
