• The Biplane Forum is a large global active community of biplane builders, owners and pilots. From Pitts to Skybolts, to older barnstormers, all types are welcome. In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

A practical compression question

So, I'm looking at this Hatz CB-1 with an O-290-D2 with 178.2 SMOH, which is described in greater detail here:

It's been sitting for about the last two years, and although I didn't explicitly ask, I am pretty sure the engine wasn't pickled when it started to sit. I do know it hasn't been run in either most or all of those two years. It has been stored indoors, in a hangar, which I suspect but don't know is heated.

At the annual they performed in September of this year, the compressions (measured cold) were 78, 72, 75 and 70. At the most recent previous annual I see in the logs, in 2011, the compressions were 78, 78, 77 and 78. Unknown if those were measured hot or cold. Recent annual claimed the engine wasn't making metal, but I'm not sure what that's worth if it hasn't been running.

Are those compression values a sign of a busted, rusty engine, or just what you'd expect after an engine in good shape has its compression tested while cold?

I'm going up to visit it tomorrow, so I'll know more then. Curious what people think about the compression values.
