In addition to our active community, our content boasts exhaustive technical information which is often sought after for projects and maintenance. This information has accumulated over the 12+ years the forum has been in existence.

The Biplane Forum is a private community. Subscriptions are only $49.99/year or $6.99/month to gain access to this great community and unmatched source of information not found anywhere else on the web. We are also a great resource for non biplane users, since many GA aircraft are built the same way (fabric and tube construction). Annual membership also comes with two BiplaneForum.com decals.

The Skybolt tank has a 29 gallon capacity.
I am adding 100LL to the tank and want to check everything (flow rate of the Andair boost pump and no pump etc.)
My first question is (I hope someone has a logical answer,'cause I am at a loss)

The tank is at an angle, aircraft with the tail wheel on the ground.
I keep adding fuel until I get to the floating ball of the fuel gauge sender. that's a bit more than 10 gallons.
The tank has two compartments (top and bottom) the top is where the fuel gauge is.
The bottom compartment has the pickup flop tube.

This is it!
When my fuel gauge shows empty, I really have 10 gallons remaining in the tank.
That's 1/3 of fuel not accounted for or nearly an hour of flight time (whichever way you look at it)
I don't plan to fly down to one gallon but is this normal?
Only trying to understand
