I took a break from building wood wings to weld up the upper fuel tank from 5052 aluminum sheet.
All went relatively well. Not quite the beautiful stack of dimes welds, but structurally good. I built three mini tanks (3 gallon - 1/3 width) to practice.
In any case, I'm getting ready to weld up the upper fuel filler flange. The flange is anodized aluminum. The filler neck looks to be some sort of steel.
What would be the proper procedure for welding up this assembly. Should I thread on the filler neck onto the flange before welding? should I try threading this on after welding? I would think the flange would distort from heat to an extent that the filler neck threads would not engage.
Is there any type of thread sealer I should use that would resist the heat of welding? Would just crank it down using German torque specifications (good'n'tight), then welding, provide a fluid tight seal around the threads?
Seeking those with experience.
