Hi all,

I am looking into buying a pitts s1s (or some very similar model). Ideally, the plane would have the following:

- S1S model
- 180 hp
- engine TT SMOH < 400
- fabric not older than 15 years and hangared
- electric system with transponder/com
- max approx 30 000 USD

Would be nice if it was located somewhat in the area of CYWG (Winnipeg, Canada), but I am willing to travel for the right airplane!

I found a lot of planes online, but the state/age of the fabric is usually what breaks the deal.

Kind regards,
digits

Welcome to the forum and good luck!

(Please tell me you are missing at least one finger because that would be an awesome callsign if you were :))

Since these days it's so hard to find ANY good solid S-1S for sale with low time engine/fabric/paint, my advice to you would be to select on condition rather than a specific engine hour/fabric age target. Hours and age alone don't mean much. Condition is all that matters. It's very optimistic attempting get into a good S-1S in the condition you want for $30K, but I wish you luck in your search.

I agree and I will add as someone who checked Barnstormers almost everyday once I quickly realized most all of the pilots winning contests were doing so in their own airplanes and not renting, a lot of the really nice planes changing hands were doing so before being listing on BS. I was lucky enough to meet someone through contests that knew of a nice Pitts that had been ground looped and was undergoing repairs that I purchased. That said I'm sure all the aircraft for sale on BS are great birds looking for the right owner. :)
Be patient and keep looking.

As far as the 30k Pitts, you can write one big check or a lot of small ones. I wanted to fly contests so I bought the nicest Pitts I could afford and have have been trying to keep it that way since.

I was in the gun business(collector guns) for over 40 years. I found there were three factors that determined value for any given model. The same is true for an aircraft.

1. condition

2. Condition

3. CONDITION.

Another one just popped on BS.
